How to Open a Keynote (.key) File Without a Mac
A .key file is a presentation made in Apple Keynote. PowerPoint can't open it, but you can look inside it here.
What you'll see
- Every slide in order, with its title, bullet points and text boxes.
- The small slide previews that Keynote saves inside the file, next to each slide's text, so you can tell which slide is which.
- Presenter notes, under each slide.
- The pictures used in the presentation — click to download, or save them all as a ZIP.
You can also download the whole presentation's text as a Word document (one section per slide) or a readable PDF.
To present it or edit it in PowerPoint
The slide design and animations need Keynote itself. Without a Mac, open the file in Keynote at iCloud.com (free Apple ID) and choose ⋯ › Download a Copy › PowerPoint or PDF. Step-by-step guide. On a Mac, use File › Export To › PowerPoint.
Common questions
Some slides show no preview picture. Newer Keynote versions don't always save previews for every slide. The text is still there.
The presentation is very large. Videos inside a Keynote file count towards its size. Files up to about 200 MB open in most browsers.
