How the Excel file is built

  • One Excel sheet per Numbers table. If a Numbers sheet holds several tables, each gets its own Excel sheet named "Sheet – Table".
  • Values keep their type. Numbers stay numbers, dates stay dates and checkboxes become TRUE/FALSE, so sorting, filtering and formulas work in Excel.
  • Number formats follow what Numbers showed: currency symbols, thousands separators, decimals and percentages.
  • Header rows and columns are bold and frozen, like in Numbers. Merged cells stay merged.
  • Formulas come across as their results. Numbers and Excel write formulas differently; copying them would break, so you get the values Numbers calculated.

If you're on a Mac or have an Apple ID

The most complete conversion is Numbers' own export: File › Export To › Excel on a Mac, or ⋯ › Download a Copy › Excel in Numbers for iCloud at iCloud.com. That keeps charts and formatting too. Use this page when you don't have Numbers, don't want to sign in, or don't want to upload the file.

Common questions

Is there a size limit? Files up to about 200 MB open in most browsers. The viewer shows the first 1,000 rows of a table on screen, but the Excel and CSV downloads always contain every row.

My dates look different in Excel. Excel shows dates in your computer's date format. The underlying date is the same — change the look with Format Cells › Date.

Can I convert several files? Open them one after another; each conversion takes a second or two once the reader has loaded.
