How to Open a .numbers File on Windows (Free, No Mac)

A .numbers file is a spreadsheet made with Apple Numbers on a Mac, iPhone or iPad. Apple doesn't make Numbers for Windows, and Excel can't open the format, so double-clicking one on a PC usually just asks which app to use.

You can open it right here, in any browser, and get an Excel file out of it.

No file handy?

Step by step

  1. Find the .numbers file (often in Downloads, or attached to an email).
  2. Drag it onto the box above, or click Choose file and select it.
  3. The first time, the page loads its Numbers reader (a few seconds). Then every sheet appears as a tab, with each table inside it.
  4. Click Download Excel (.xlsx) to get the whole spreadsheet, or CSV for just the table you're looking at.

Each Numbers table becomes its own Excel sheet. Header rows are kept bold and frozen, dates stay real dates and numbers stay numbers, so you can keep calculating in Excel.

Common questions

The page says the file is protected with a password. Password-protected spreadsheets are encrypted. The owner needs to remove the password in Numbers (File › Set Password), or open it at iCloud.com with the password and export it.

I renamed it to .zip and only see a picture. That's the preview image Numbers stores inside the file. The real data is in a binary format, which is what this page reads for you.

Can I edit the spreadsheet here? No — this is a viewer. Download the Excel file and edit it in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.
